The Webb Page

Purpose:

1884: "In addition to the history of the Church in Kentucky for the century of its existence just closing, the volume contains the details of Catholic emigration to the state from 1785 to 1814, with life sketches of the more prominent among the colonists, as well as of the early missionary priests of the state and very many of their successors."

Hon. Ben. J. Webb

His service to his readers of the day was to capture on paper the daily routine and lives of the common man in central Kentucky. Proud of his Catholic-Christian heritage, it was his goal to write a detailed description of the lives of the early pioneers who emigrated from southern Maryland to this Holy Land of central Bluegrass Kentucky.

Benj. Webb's Book:

Scanned to print like original book pages. You are viewing "facsimilies" of Webb's original work in this section. Using your copy of Reader (get from the Adobe site, click link below), view (or read) and print the pages. Click on the chapter's title to link to that converted PDF document (in blue). The chapters have been scannned and converted to Adobe PDF files with searchable text (termed "Original Image with Hidden Text;") this gives us an exact facsimile of the page as in standard PDF but with "searchable text". However, the files are much larger in size so take longer to copy down, particularly if you are connected through a modem. The title, copyright, table of contents and any other image are NOT indexed as they are printable images only. Use your printer to print the pages, images, and text you wish to preserve. Click on the chapter's title to link to that converted searchable PDF document (in orange).

This review work took the greatest amount of time. Each chapter was scanned into TIFF, converted into readable text using OmniPage OCR software, edited, proofread and saved. As each chapter was completed, it was posted on this site. You are linked to each chapter as it was completed in Microsoft Word format. Click on the chapter's title to link to that converted Word document (highlighted in green).

You will be prompted to open the chapter or save it to your computer's hard drive, a disk or other location. The pages linked to these Word files will not match those in your printed edition of Webb's book as the scanning process counts all pages, including images, blank pages and titles.

Images, of course, are not searchable. Searchable PDF: Click the Printer icon to print the page you wish to duplicate. Enjoy! You may use Reader's toolbar to print a page, move the page around (Hand Tool), zoom in and out and search (the little binoculars are programmed to Find the text in the Preface and Acknowledgments. Use the smaller binoculars to Find Again for the same name, location, word. For example, finding "Catholic" while on page 1 (image of Flaget) will skip you through the preface and table of contents to the text in the Author's Preface (page 10 of these 18). Clicking Find Again also locates the next "Catholic" entry, also on page 10 before "finding" many more on 11 through 18. Finding "Catholic" brings up Catholics and Catholicity as these words contain the root search criteria. Use the Find utility to locate your family! Enjoy!

You may use Word's Find command to locate names and places on the text pages of these chapters. Since you control Word on your own computer, use its utilities and printing capabities to complete your research.

The historian, genealogist and others are encouraged to print the facsimiles of these pages directly using Adobe Reader (see description and link above) or download the chapter to print your selections of the full text in Microsoft Word format. The reprinted book is available from several booksellers in the Commonwealth (McDowell Publications is one such service).

2002-2003: This Webb Page was created to serve and inform the reader of the vision of one man, the Honorable Benjamin J. Webb. Newer technologies, other than print, now encourage the reader to again place himself or herself into the late 19th century. Current events in the Roman Catholic Church today may cause distress to some of the faithful but, after reading this family-church history, one is renewed with the fortitude and examples of our ancestors and of the Spirit that continues to renew us.

History of Development:

July, 2006: This is an evolving work. Future links will be to maps sites, bookstores and other personal genealogies. You are all welcome to contribute.
